Knit and gauge

How thick should your beanie be?

Gauge, written GG, is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. A low gauge knits thick yarn into a chunky, warm beanie. A high gauge knits fine yarn into a light, smooth beanie that shows small logos and jacquard details sharply.

GaugeKnit lookTypical beanies
3–5GGChunky, bold stitches, very warmCable knit, fisherman and big pom-pom styles
7–9GGClassic medium knitCuffed, high top and slouchy beanies, most logo beanies

FAQ

Custom beanie manufacturing: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for custom beanies?

The minimum order is 50 pieces per design, with a monthly capacity of around 100,000 pieces for larger runs. The one exception is Bluetooth beanies: the minimum is 1,000 pieces when we source and fit the audio module, and 50 pieces when you supply your own module.

How long does beanie production take?

Standard production lead time is approximately 14 days after sample approval; 7 days is possible on request, and complex products or very large orders (100,000–200,000 pcs) can take up to one month. Hand-crocheted beanies take longer than 14 days. The confirmed schedule is agreed for each order. Express shipping by DHL, FedEx or UPS then takes 3–6 working days.

What is the difference between a pre-paid sample and a pre-production sample?

A pre-paid (physical) sample is a real piece you receive and check in your hands; it is paid before production, made in about 5 to 7 days and then shipped to you. A pre-production sample is free: we make it after your order and the 30 % advance payment, and you approve it on photos, videos or a video call before the bulk production starts.

Which beanie categories do you make?

What does gauge mean for a beanie?

Gauge is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. Low gauges such as 3GG or 5GG give chunky, warm knits; 7GG is the classic medium knit of most logo beanies; 12GG and 14GG give fine, light beanies with sharp jacquard detail. We recommend a gauge for your style and season.

Which yarn should I choose?

Acrylic is durable, easy to care for and good value, and anti-pilling acrylic keeps its surface clean. Wool and merino are warmer and suit premium ranges. Cotton and bamboo blends are lighter and breathable for mild weather, and recycled polyester suits eco collections.

Can you add my logo and labels?

Yes. We offer woven and printed labels, flat and 3D embroidery, jacquard logos knitted into the fabric, leather, rubber and PVC patches, screen printing and heat transfer. Your brand goes on the product and the packaging; Mr Balaclava's name does not appear.

Are detachable pom-poms available?

Yes. Pom-poms can be made from yarn, faux fur or related materials and attached permanently or made detachable, so the beanie can be washed or worn without the pom-pom.

Which sizes can you make?

We make baby, kids and adult beanies, either as one size or graded to your own size chart, and adjust crown depth and cuff height to the style.

Do you make a sample before bulk production?

Yes. Every order starts with a mockup and a tech pack, followed by a physical sample. We adjust fit, colour and branding until you approve the sample, and bulk production follows the approved version.

What certifications does Mr Balaclava have?

Eco Jersey Limited, which powers Mr Balaclava, is ISO 9001 certified and a Sedex member; copies of the certificate and the membership details go to customers with an order history or a substantial order. Yarns can be sourced from OEKO-TEX® certified mills, and the mill's certificate is available on request.

Do you ship beanie orders worldwide?

Yes. Every order ships with tracking. Express delivery by DHL, FedEx or UPS takes 3–6 working days, and larger orders can travel by air or sea freight. Shipping is priced by the weight of your order: up to 100 kg it travels door to door by express courier with import duties paid by us, and heavier orders go by air cargo, or by sea cargo from 500 kg, to your nearest airport or port.
