Buyer's guide

What makes a good everyday sock?

The crew sock is the workhorse of the range: it fits under trousers, with shorts, in work boots and in trainers. A good one holds up at the cuff so it does not slide down, stretches around the calf without cutting in, and keeps the heel and toe strong. Rib knit at the cuff and arch gives grip and stretch, while a plain knit leg keeps the surface smooth for a printed or jacquard design.

Cushioning is the main choice. A full terry sole feels soft and absorbs shock, so it suits sport and work. A thin flat knit suits office and casual wear. We set it per style and confirm the feel in the sample. See the sock yarns page for how each fibre behaves.

Which sock length fits your range?

A quick guide to the lengths buyers request most. The right choice depends on the shoe it goes with, the use and the price point.

Crew and quarter socks

Why choose a quarter sock?

A quarter sock covers the ankle bone and a little more, so it protects the skin from the edge of a shoe or a boot, without the warmth and bulk of a crew sock. It is a favourite for running, court sports, cycling shoes and low work boots, where a sock that stays out of the way matters.

Because the leg is short, most of the design work is in the foot: terry cushioning under the ball and heel, an arch band that holds the sock in place and a ventilation panel across the instep.

Pattern and fashion socks

How pattern socks are designed

A pattern sock is knitted, not printed: the design is built into the fabric by jacquard, so it is on both sides of the leg and does not crack or fade. The limit is the number of colours and the width of the pattern, which depend on the machine. We review every artwork against those limits before sampling and suggest simple changes that keep the look and lower the cost.

Fashion socks sell on design, packaging and story, so presentation matters: paper sleeves, gift boxes and display cards are part of the order. Short runs of many designs are common, and our 50-pair minimum lets a new label test a range.

Cotton socks

What to know about cotton socks

Pure cotton wears out quickly at the heel and toe and does not stretch back, so socks are made from cotton blended with a little nylon for strength and elastane for stretch. Cotton makes up the bulk of the sock, so it still feels natural, and the blend keeps its shape through washing. Combed cotton is smoother and stronger than carded cotton, and mercerized cotton adds sheen and takes dye more deeply.

Cotton absorbs sweat but is slow to dry, which suits everyday, office and casual wear better than intense sport. For sport, a polyester blend or a cotton-rich sock with wicking zones works better.

FAQ

Everyday and fashion socks: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for everyday and fashion socks?

The minimum order is 50 pairs per design.

Which yarn is best for everyday crew socks?

A combed cotton and nylon blend with a little elastane is the usual choice: it is soft, breathable and keeps its shape. Polyester blends dry faster for sport.

What is the difference between quarter and crew socks?

A quarter sock stops a few centimetres above the ankle bone; a crew sock reaches the middle of the calf. Quarter socks are lighter and cooler, crew socks cover and warm more.

Can you knit a full-colour illustration?

Yes, within the colour and width limits of the machine. We review the artwork and suggest a simplified version if needed.

Do you make short runs of many designs?

Yes. The minimum is 50 pairs per design, so you can test several designs in one order.

Why are cotton socks blended with nylon and elastane?

Pure cotton wears through at the heel and toe and loses shape. A little nylon adds strength and elastane adds stretch, so the sock lasts and fits.

Do you make kids' crew socks?

Yes. Kids', women's and men's sizes are all available, graded to your size chart.

How long does everyday sock production take?

Standard production lead time is approximately 14 days after sample approval. Actual lead time depends on the product, quantity, customization and material availability, and the confirmed schedule is agreed for each order. Express shipping by DHL, FedEx or UPS then takes 3–6 working days.
