Buyer's guide

What makes a sock good for sport?

A sport sock does four jobs. It cushions the foot where impact lands, it moves sweat away from the skin so blisters do not start, it holds the foot in place so it does not slide inside the shoe, and it stays strong at the heel and toe. That is why sport socks use terry loops in the impact zones, a fine mesh across the instep and an elastic band around the arch.

Yarn matters as much as construction. Polyester and nylon blends wick sweat and dry fast, cotton-rich blends feel soft for gym use and merino blends regulate temperature on long sessions. See our sock yarns page for how each fibre behaves.

Knee-high socks

Getting a knee-high sock to stay up

The hard part of a knee-high sock is keeping it up. The top band carries elastic yarn in a rib knit that grips the leg without leaving a mark, and the leg is shaped to follow the calf. A sock that is too tight at the top is uncomfortable; one that is too loose slides down within an hour, so we confirm the band tension in the sample.

Knee-high socks are also a design canvas: the long leg carries stripes, team colours and logos at a size that shows. Striped tube socks are classic for sport and school, while plain colours suit uniforms and fashion ranges.

Compression

Compression for sport and travel

A compression sock uses more elastic yarn and a knit that changes tension along the leg: the fit is firmest at the ankle and eases towards the top. Athletes wear them for the supported feel during and after exercise, and travellers wear them on long journeys. The result depends on the yarn, the knit and the size chart, so the sizes and tension are set carefully in the sample.

These are sport, travel and casual products. We do not describe them as medical devices and we do not promise health results. See our Sport Compression Socks for the details.

FAQ

Sport, performance and team socks: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for sport and team socks?

The minimum order is 50 pairs per design.

Which yarn is best for running socks?

A polyester or nylon blend with elastane wicks sweat and dries quickly. Merino blends suit long runs in changing temperatures.

Can you make left and right foot socks?

Yes. Shaped left and right socks can be knitted on request; they cost a little more and are usually kept for performance ranges.

How many stripe colours can a sock have?

The number depends on the knitting machine, and we confirm it when we review your artwork. Simple two- and three-colour stripes are the most common and the most economical.

Can you make team socks in knee-high length?

Yes. Knee-high team socks in your colours are one of our most requested styles; see our team and club socks page.

Are your compression socks medical products?

No. We make sport and lifestyle compression socks. If you sell a medical product, the regulatory work and pressure testing in your market are your responsibility.

Are quarter socks suitable for sport?

Yes. With terry cushioning, an arch band and a ventilation panel they are a popular running and court sock.

How long does sport sock production take?

Standard production lead time is approximately 14 days after sample approval. Actual lead time depends on the product, quantity, customization and material availability, and the confirmed schedule is agreed for each order. Express shipping by DHL, FedEx or UPS then takes 3–6 working days.
