Buyer's guide

How thermal socks keep feet warm

Warmth comes from trapped air. A terry-loop sock has thousands of small loops on the inside that hold warm air against the foot, and a brushed interior does the same with a soft raised pile. Wool and merino add warmth even when damp and resist odour, while acrylic gives bulk and colour at a lower price. Polyester thermal blends dry fast, which matters for active use.

The right weight depends on the use. A light thermal sock suits city winters and layered boots, a mid weight suits hiking and outdoor work, and a heavy full-terry sock suits cold storage, ski and deep winter.

Merino and wool

Merino socks, blends and what to choose

Merino is a fine wool: its thin fibres feel soft rather than itchy and it keeps the foot warm even when damp. It also resists odour, so merino socks can be worn for several days on the trail. Pure merino is fragile, so socks use merino blended with nylon for strength and elastane for stretch. A lower merino share brings the cost down and adds durability.

Wool blends with acrylic or cotton offer warmth at a lower price, and they take bright colours and jacquard patterns well. See our merino wool socks page for the details.

FAQ

Winter and outdoor socks: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for winter and outdoor socks?

The minimum order is 50 pairs per design.

What is the warmest sock construction?

A full terry-loop knit in a wool or merino blend is the warmest. Brushed interior socks are softer and lighter; polyester thermal blends dry fastest.

Do you make ski socks too?

Yes. Over-the-calf ski socks with cushioned shin, heel and toe are on our ski wear pages.

Can thermal socks have a jacquard pattern?

Yes. Nordic, striped and logo patterns are knitted in, and heavier socks show the pattern in a chunky, textured way.

Are merino socks itchy?

Fine merino fibres feel soft on the skin. Coarser wool can itch, so we suggest a fine merino for a sock worn against bare skin.

How long does winter sock production take?

Standard production lead time is approximately 14 days after sample approval. Actual lead time depends on the product, quantity, customization and material availability, and the confirmed schedule is agreed for each order. Express shipping by DHL, FedEx or UPS then takes 3–6 working days.
