Buyer's guide

Choosing the right silk for your scarf

Silk is chosen by weave and by weight. Twill has a fine diagonal rib and a firm handle, so it is the classic fabric for printed squares. Habotai is a light, smooth plain weave for airy scarves, satin has the most lustre, and chiffon and georgette are sheer. Weight is measured in momme: the higher the number, the heavier and more opaque the silk.

Mulberry silk, from silkworms fed on mulberry leaves, has the longest and most even fibres, which gives the smoothest fabric and the brightest prints. We match weave and weight to your design and price point and confirm the handle in a sample. For a similar look at a lower price, polyester satin is the usual choice.

Silk satin

Silk satin or polyester satin?

Satin can be woven from different fibres. Silk satin is the most luxurious: light, cool and with a deep lustre. Polyester satin looks similar at a lower price, is very durable and takes sublimation prints. Viscose satin is softer and less shiny, with a fluid drape.

For uniforms, events and value ranges with bright sublimated prints, see our printed scarves.

Hand-rolled hems

How are silk scarves finished?

A hand-rolled hem is rolled and stitched by hand into a small, rounded edge. It is the traditional finish of luxury printed squares; a machine-rolled hem is flatter and costs less.

Branding stays discreet on silk: a small woven or satin label, a signature printed in the design or an embroidered monogram, with hang tags and gift boxes for retail.

FAQ

Silk scarves: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for silk scarves?

The minimum order is 50 pieces per design. Larger runs are made on the same lines, with a monthly capacity of around 100,000 pieces.

What is momme?

Momme (mm) is the unit used to weigh silk. A higher momme means a heavier, denser and more opaque fabric. Light scarves use a low momme; printed squares that should hold their shape use a heavier twill or satin.

What is mulberry silk?

Mulberry silk comes from silkworms fed on mulberry leaves. Its fibres are long and even, which gives a smooth, strong fabric with a bright lustre that prints well.

Are hand-rolled hems available?

Yes. Hand-rolled hems are the traditional finish for silk squares, and we also offer machine-rolled and narrow hems for lower price points.

Is satin the same as silk?

No. Satin is a weave that gives a glossy surface; silk is a fibre. Silk satin combines both, while polyester and viscose satin give a similar look at a lower price.

Can silk scarves be sublimation printed?

No. Sublimation only bonds with polyester. Silk is printed digitally or by screen; for a sublimated look at a lower price, polyester satin or silk-touch twill is the usual choice.

How long does silk scarf production take?

Standard production lead time is approximately 14 days after sample approval. Actual lead time depends on the product, quantity, customization and material availability, and the confirmed schedule is agreed for each order. Express shipping by DHL, FedEx or UPS then takes 3–6 working days.
