Buyer's guide

What makes a balaclava work in extreme cold

Warmth alone is not enough below freezing. Wind strips heat from the face, and breath turns to frost inside the fabric. A good extreme cold weather balaclava therefore combines three things: an insulating inner layer, a wind-resistant outer layer, and a breathable zone at the mouth. The neck should be long enough to seal against a jacket collar.

FAQ

Cold weather balaclavas: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for cold weather balaclavas?

The minimum order is 50 pieces per design. Larger runs are made on the same lines, with a monthly capacity of around 100,000 pieces.

Which fabric is warmest for a thermal balaclava?

Thermal fleece and merino wool are the warmest inner layers we make. Merino also handles moisture well. Adding a wind-resistant outer layer makes a bigger difference in wind than a thicker inner layer alone.

How do you stop the balaclava from icing up at the mouth?

With a breathable zone at the mouth: a mesh or perforated panel lets moist breath escape instead of freezing in the fabric. A fold-down mouth panel is another option.

Can a thermal balaclava be worn under a helmet?

Yes. We keep the crown thin with flat seams and put the warmth where the helmet does not cover: the face, the neck and the chin.

How long does cold weather balaclava production take?

Samples are sent within 5–7 days of your order. Once the sample is approved, standard lead time is 14 days; 7 days is possible on request. Complex products or very large orders (100,000–200,000 pcs) can take up to one month. Express shipping by DHL, FedEx or UPS then takes 3–6 working days.
