Beanies are simple to size because the knit stretches. Even so, the height, the cuff and the width decide how a beanie sits, and buyers often ask for measurements to check a style against one they already sell. This guide gives the standard measurements of our styles.
How are adult beanies sized?
Most adult beanies are one size. A knitted rib stretches and recovers, so one size fits head sizes of about 54–60 cm. Graded adult sizes, such as S/M and L/XL, are made to order for brands that need them.
How do you measure a beanie?
Lay the beanie flat without stretching it and measure in centimetres. Measurements are usually given with a tolerance of about ± 0.5 cm, because a knit relaxes slightly.
- Height: from the bottom edge to the top of the crown, with the cuff folded if the style has one.
- Cuff depth: the height of the folded cuff.
- Width: straight across the bottom edge, laid flat.
- Maximum stretch: the circumference the edge stretches to without strain.

Kids and baby sizes
Kids beanies are not small adult beanies: they have their own crown depth and width. Our kids beanies measure about 18 cm high with the cuff folded and 18 cm wide for 4–7 years; our baby beanie about 15 × 15 cm for 0–12 months. Kids and baby sizes are made to order, graded to your own size chart.
| Age group | Typical head circumference |
|---|---|
| Baby (0–12 months) | About 34–46 cm |
| Toddler (1–3 years) | About 46–50 cm |
| Kids (4–7 years) | About 50–53 cm |
| Older kids (8–12 years) | About 52–55 cm |
| Adults | About 54–60 cm |
How do the knit and the yarn change the fit?
A rib stretches more than a jersey, so rib beanies fit a wider range of heads. Chunky 3–5GG knits sit a little looser and look bigger; fine 12–14GG knits sit close to the head. A fleece or cotton lining makes the fit slightly snugger, and a jacquard knit stretches a little less than a plain rib, which is why we set the pattern to sit flat on the head.
Can you match our size chart?
Yes. Send your size chart or a reference beanie and we grade the pattern to it, then confirm the fit on a sample before production.
Frequently asked questions
Do merino and acrylic beanies fit the same?
Nearly. Merino and acrylic both stretch and recover well; chunky knits and lined beanies sit slightly snugger. We check the fit on the sample.
