Beanie Pom-Poms: Yarn, Faux Fur or Detachable?

Which pom-pom to put on a custom beanie: yarn, faux fur or detachable, with sizes, colours, attachment and care, and what each adds to the price.

A pom-pom is the detail that turns a plain beanie into a winter best seller. It also changes the price, the care and the packing, so it is worth choosing on purpose. This guide compares the three pom-poms we make and how to choose between them.

You can see them on our pom-pom and winter beanies page and in the pom-pom beanie catalog.

Yarn pom-poms

A yarn pom-pom is wound from the same acrylic yarn or wool blend as the beanie, so it matches the body or the cuff exactly. It can be one colour, or two or three colours wound together for club and team beanies.

It is the most durable pom-pom and washes with the beanie. On adult beanies it is usually about 10 cm across, on kids beanies about 7 cm.

Faux fur pom-poms

A faux fur pom-pom is larger and fluffier, usually about 12 cm across, and gives the beanie a fashion look. It is made of synthetic fibres; we do not use animal fur. Natural tones, a matching colour or a contrast colour are all possible.

Detachable pom-poms

A detachable faux fur pom-pom clips onto the crown with a press stud. The beanie can be washed without the pom-pom, which keeps the faux fur fluffy, and the buyer can wear it both ways. It also packs flatter for shipping.

How are pom-poms attached?

Fixed pom-poms are sewn through the crown and pull-checked by hand on every piece. Detachable pom-poms are on a press stud that is fixed to the crown. For babies we recommend small, firmly stitched pom-poms, or none.

Which pom-pom suits which buyer?

  • Clubs, schools and fan shops: a yarn pom-pom in two or three club colours, wound to match the stripes.
  • Winter retail and ski shops: a yarn or faux fur pom-pom on a cuffed or cable beanie.
  • Fashion brands: a large faux fur pom-pom, often detachable, in a natural or contrast tone.
  • Kids ranges: a small yarn pom-pom, sewn on firmly; faux fur for older children.

How are pom-pom beanies packed?

Pom-pom beanies are packed so the pom-pom keeps its shape: individually in a polybag or a retail box, or in bulk cartons with the pom-poms facing up. Detachable pom-poms can be packed clipped on or separately in the same bag.

What does a pom-pom add to the price?

In the Order Builder a yarn pom-pom adds $0.35 per piece, a faux fur pom-pom $0.95 and a detachable faux fur pom-pom $1.25. When a beanie already has a pom-pom, its price includes it, and changing it costs only the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can the pom-pom be in our brand colours?

Yes. Yarn pom-poms are wound in your colours; faux fur pom-poms are matched to your references as closely as the available colours allow.

Does a pom-pom fit under a helmet?

No. For ski and bike helmets choose a beanie without a pom-pom, such as our sports and performance beanies.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order is 50 pieces per design, with the pom-pom of your choice. Standard production lead time is approximately 14 days after sample approval.
