Lower-impact materials we work with

Four materials cover most sustainable collections we make. Each suits different products, so start from the use and the feel you want.

MaterialWhy it is a lower-impact choicePerformanceBest for
Organic cottonGrown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisersSoft, breathable and skin-friendly; takes reactive dyes wellBeanies, scarves, socks, everyday balaclavas and linings
Recycled polyester (RPET)Made from recycled PET, such as used plastic bottles, instead of new oil-based polyesterMoisture-wicking and quick-drying; suits sublimation printingSports balaclavas, helmet liners, neck gaiters, sublimated beanies, ski wear layers
Bamboo viscoseMade from bamboo, a fast-growing plant, turned into fibre by the viscose processVery soft and breathable; knits lighter than cottonSocks, linings, lightweight beanies
Merino woolA natural, renewable fibre that resists odour, so products need washing less oftenRegulates temperature and wicks moisture; treated against shrinking and itchingSki masks, base layers, premium beanies and balaclavas

Natural fibres

Organic cotton and merino wool

Natural fibres are the first choice for knitwear worn close to the skin. We work with both in pure and blended versions, dyed to your Pantone colours.

  • Organic cotton jersey and knit for beanies, scarves, socks and balaclava linings, dyed with reactive dyes for colours that last through washing.
  • Merino wool as 100% merino or in wool-nylon and wool-spandex blends, treated against shrinking and itching.
  • Proven in production: our merino wool balaclava project used a 260 GSM merino fabric.

Recycled and regenerated fibres

Recycled polyester and bamboo viscose

For sports and performance products, recycled polyester keeps the technical properties buyers expect. For soft, lightweight products, bamboo viscose is a popular alternative to cotton.

  • Recycled polyester (RPET)

RPET wicks moisture and dries quickly, just like virgin polyester, and takes sublimation prints for all-over designs. We use it for sports balaclavas, helmet liners, neck gaiters, sublimated beanies and ski wear layers.

  • Bamboo viscose

Bamboo jersey is very soft, breathable and knits lighter than cotton, which suits socks, linings and lightweight beanies. It is a regenerated cellulose fibre: the plant is turned into fibre by the viscose process.

Label it correctly

Because bamboo textiles are made by the viscose process, many markets require them to be labelled as viscose or rayon (for example "viscose from bamboo") rather than simply "bamboo". Recycled and organic claims should be backed by the documentation of the fabric in your order.

Tell us which claim you want to make, and we'll check the paperwork available before you order.

Tested fabrics

Safe to wear, built to last

A product that lasts is one of the simplest ways to lower its footprint. Our fabrics are checked for what touches the skin and for how they hold up in use.

  • From OEKO-TEX® certified mills

OEKO-TEX® is an independent certification system for textiles; its best-known label tests fabrics and yarns for harmful substances. We buy from OEKO-TEX® certified mills and share the mill's certificate for the fabric in your order. The certification belongs to the mill, not to Mr Balaclava.

  • Tested for durability

Every fabric in our range is tested for tensile strength, colour retention, moisture absorption, stretch recovery and long-term durability, so your product keeps its shape and colour wash after wash.

How ordering works

Three steps to your order

Every order starts with your brief and ends with tracked delivery. The standard production lead time is 14 days.

  1. Send your brief

Tell us the style, fabric, quantities, branding and deadline. We reply with a quote and suggest suitable materials.

  2. Approve the sample

We confirm every measurement, colour and logo placement in a mockup and a tech pack, then send your sample within 5–7 days.

  3. Production and delivery

Bulk production takes 14 days as standard. Every piece is inspected, packed to your specification and shipped with tracking.

FAQ

Sustainable materials: frequently asked questions

Which sustainable fabrics can I choose for custom headwear?

Organic cotton, recycled polyester (RPET), bamboo viscose and merino wool, in pure and blended versions. All of them come from OEKO-TEX® certified mills, and our team suggests the best fit for your product with the quote.

Does recycled polyester perform as well as virgin polyester?

For moisture-wicking and quick-drying performance, yes. That is why we use it for sports balaclavas, helmet liners, neck gaiters and ski wear layers. It also takes sublimation prints in the same way.

Is bamboo fabric sustainable?

Bamboo grows quickly, but bamboo textiles are made by the viscose process, which uses chemicals to turn the plant into fibre. It is a soft, breathable choice for socks and linings. Label it as viscose or rayon made from bamboo where your market requires it.

Why choose merino wool for balaclavas and beanies?

Merino regulates temperature, wicks moisture and resists odour, so it stays comfortable over long days outdoors and needs washing less often. Ours is treated against shrinking and itching.

Can I get the OEKO-TEX certificate for my fabric?

Yes. Our fabrics and yarns come from OEKO-TEX® certified mills, and we share the mill's certificate for the fabric in your order on request. Mr Balaclava itself is not OEKO-TEX® certified as a company.

What is the minimum order for organic or recycled fabrics?

The minimum order is 50 pieces per design, the same as for every other fabric. Some colours and blends depend on what the mill has available; we confirm this with your quote.
