# What Is a Shiesty? The Slang, the Ski Mask and Why a Balaclava Got the Name

What “shiesty” means as slang, why a one-hole balaclava is called a shiesty, how it differs from a ski mask, what it is made of and where face masks are restricted.

*A plain black knitted one-hole balaclava: the style most people mean when they say “shiesty”.*

In short

A shiesty is a close-fitting balaclava with one wide opening for the eyes and usually no mouth hole. The name comes from Memphis rapper Pooh Shiesty, who often performed in one around 2020–2021; his stage name uses the older slang word “shiesty”, meaning shady or untrustworthy. In practice a shiesty is a balaclava, which many people also call a ski mask.

“Shiesty” is a word with two lives. In slang it describes someone shady or untrustworthy. Since around 2020–2021 it has also become the everyday name for a particular balaclava: the close-fitting one with a single wide opening for the eyes, often worn in black with a hoodie.

We make balaclavas in Sialkot, Pakistan, for brands, shops, clubs and event companies, so we get asked about the shiesty a lot. This guide explains both meanings, where the name came from, how a shiesty compares with a balaclava and a ski mask, what it is made of, and what to know about where face coverings are restricted. For the wider picture, see our [guide to the different types of balaclavas](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/different-types-of-balaclavas/).

## What is a shiesty?

A shiesty is a balaclava with one wide opening across both eyes and, in most cases, no opening for the mouth. It covers the head, face and neck, fits closely, and is usually made from a thin stretch fabric or a fine rib knit.

People also say “shiesty mask” or “shiesty ski mask”. The name describes a look rather than a different product: in the trade it is a one-hole balaclava, the same construction we describe in our [guide to balaclava face openings](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/balaclava-face-openings/).

## What does “shiesty” mean in slang?

As slang, “shiesty” means shady, shifty or not to be trusted, as in “that deal sounds shiesty”. It is American slang and is heard in rap lyrics from at least the late 1990s.

Where the word comes from is not certain. Many dictionaries suggest it grew out of “shyster”, an old word for a dishonest lawyer or trader; others suggest a blend with “feisty”. Today the word is used in two ways:

- **The adjective:** someone or something shady, sneaky or dishonest.
- **The noun:** a one-hole balaclava, as in “he wore a black shiesty”.

Context tells you which meaning is intended. If someone is talking about clothes, they almost always mean the mask.

## Why is a balaclava called a shiesty?

A balaclava is called a shiesty because of Pooh Shiesty, a rapper from Memphis, Tennessee, who often wore one on stage and in photos. As his music took off in late 2020 and early 2021, fans started calling the mask by his name.

His stage name joins his childhood nickname, “Pooh”, with the slang word “shiesty”. His single “Back in Blood”, with Lil Durk, came out in November 2020, and his album *Shiesty Season* followed in February 2021 and reached the top three of the US Billboard 200. Around the same time, people in Memphis were already calling these masks “shiestys”, and the nickname spread through social media and streetwear.

So the mask was not named after the slang word directly. It was named after a person, whose name came from the slang. That is why both meanings share one word.

## Is a shiesty the same as a balaclava or a ski mask?

Yes, mostly. A shiesty is a type of balaclava, and in American English “ski mask” usually means a balaclava too. The difference is in the details people expect when they use each word.

| Name | What people usually mean | Typical openings | Typical fabric |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Shiesty** | A close, sleek balaclava worn as streetwear or for cold days | One wide eye opening, no mouth hole | Thin stretch jersey or fine rib knit, usually black |
| **Balaclava** | The general name for any head-face-neck covering | One-, two- or three-hole, or open face | Knits, fleece, stretch jersey, merino, mesh |
| **Ski mask** | A balaclava for cold weather and winter sports | Often three-hole or one-hole | Knit or fleece, sometimes thin layers for under a helmet |

*How the three names are usually used.*

The face opening is the clearest way to tell them apart, and our article on [balaclavas vs ski masks](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/balaclava-vs-ski-mask/) goes into the naming in more detail.

![Diagram of five balaclava face openings: one-hole, wide one-hole, two-hole, three-hole and open face](https://mrbalaclava.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/balaclava-face-openings-diagram-1024x683.webp)

*The main face openings: 1 one-hole (the shiesty style), 2 wide one-hole, 3 two-hole, 4 three-hole, 5 open face.*

The three-hole knitted mask, with separate eye openings and a mouth opening, is the classic winter ski mask. It is a close relative of the shiesty, but most people would not call it one.

*A three-hole knitted balaclava: the classic “ski mask” look rather than a shiesty.*

## What does a shiesty look like?

A typical shiesty has a smooth, close fit around the head and face, one opening that frames the eyes and the bridge of the nose, and a neck that tucks into a hoodie or jacket. It is usually plain black, although grey, navy, white, camouflage and bright colours are common too.

- **Opening:** one horizontal eye opening, sometimes cut a little wider for glasses or goggles.
- **Mouth:** usually covered; some sports versions add a mouth opening or a mesh panel for breathing.
- **Neck:** short and close, or longer so it stays tucked in.
- **Details:** often plain, sometimes with a small logo, a woven label or a printed graphic.

## What is a shiesty made of?

Most shiestys are made from a thin stretch fabric or a fine rib knit. The fabric decides how warm, how sleek and how breathable the mask feels.

| Material | How it usually feels | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Polyester/elastane stretch jersey](https://mrbalaclava.com/materials/fabric/polyester-elastane-stretch-jersey/) | Thin, smooth and sleek; dries quickly | The classic streetwear shiesty, under helmets, layering |
| [Acrylic rib knit](https://mrbalaclava.com/materials/fabric/acrylic-rib-knit/) | Soft and stretchy, warmer, visible knit texture | Everyday winter wear, the knitted look |
| [Merino wool blend](https://mrbalaclava.com/materials/fabric/merino-wool-blend/) | Soft, warm for its weight, tends to resist odour | Cold days, longer wear |
| [Polyester microfleece](https://mrbalaclava.com/materials/fabric/polyester-microfleece/) | Brushed and cosy, a little bulkier | Cold, windy days |

*Typical behaviour; the exact feel depends on the yarn, the knit and the finish.*

Thin stretch masks are usually cut from fabric and sewn, while knitted masks are knitted to shape on a machine. Our article on [knitted vs cut-and-sew balaclavas](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/knitted-vs-cut-and-sew-balaclavas/) explains the difference, and [our materials comparison](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/balaclava-materials-compared/) covers more fabrics.

## How do you spell and pronounce shiesty?

Both “shiesty” and “sheisty” are common, and you will also see “shysty”. None of them is more correct than the others; “shiesty” is the spelling linked to the rapper and the mask. It is pronounced “SHY-stee”.

Other languages usually keep the English word for the trend and use their own word for the garment: “Sturmhaube” or “Skimaske” in German, “cagoule” in French and “pasamontañas” in Spanish.

## Are shiesty masks banned anywhere?

Shiesty masks are legal to buy and own, but some places restrict full-face coverings. Rules usually apply to specific places, such as public transport, schools or shops, rather than to the mask itself.

In Philadelphia, for example, the transit authority SEPTA said in May 2023 that full-face masks are not allowed on its property, and the city passed a rule in December 2023 covering places such as parks, schools and city buildings, with exceptions for religious, winter-sport and safety use. Some schools set similar dress-code rules, and some shops ask customers to lower face coverings when they come in.

**Wearing a shiesty considerately**

- Check local rules for public transport, schools and events.
- Lower the face part when entering a shop, bank or office.
- Keep it for what it does well: cold, wind, winter sports, riding and streetwear style.

## How should you wear and wash a shiesty?

Pull it on from the top, line the opening up with your eyes, and tuck the neck into your collar so it stays in place. If you wear it under a helmet or goggles, a thin stretch fabric usually sits flatter than a thick knit. Our [guide to wearing a balaclava](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/how-to-wear-a-balaclava/) shows more ways.

Most shiestys can be washed gently at a low temperature and dried flat, away from direct heat, which helps the fabric keep its stretch and shape. Always follow the care label; see [when and how to wash a balaclava](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/when-to-wash-balaclava/).

## Can you make shiesty-style masks for your own brand?

Yes. A shiesty-style mask is a one-hole balaclava, which we make in stretch jersey, knits, merino blends and fleece. Many brands start from our [full face balaclava](https://mrbalaclava.com/balaclavas/full-face-balaclava-manufacturer/) patterns and choose the fabric, colour, opening size and neck length.

- **Branding:** embroidery, woven or printed labels, a knitted-in jacquard pattern or a printed graphic; see our [guide to balaclava decoration methods](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/balaclava-decoration-methods/).
- **Order size:** from 50 pieces per design.
- **Timing:** a pre-paid physical sample takes about 5–7 days; standard production takes approximately 14 days after sample approval.
- **Your brand only:** Mr Balaclava’s name never appears on your products, and we only print designs you own or are licensed to use.

If you are planning a range, [send us your idea for a quote](https://mrbalaclava.com/contact-us/) and we will suggest fabrics and openings that suit how the mask will be worn.
