# Bandana Printing Methods: Screen, Discharge, Digital, Sublimation and Embroidery

How each bandana printing and branding method works, which fabric it needs, how many colours and how much detail it allows, how it feels, how the back looks and when its set-up pays off.

*Screen printing cotton bandanas, one colour and one screen at a time.*

In short

The fabric decides the print. Cotton bandanas are screen printed for bold, flat colours, discharge printed for soft light designs on dark grounds, or digitally printed for photos and many colours. Polyester bandanas are sublimated for full-colour, edge-to-edge designs on a light base. Heat transfer suits small logos and names, embroidery a corner logo, and woven or printed labels carry the brand discreetly. Screens cost set-up per colour, so screen printing pays off on larger runs; digital and sublimation suit small runs and many designs.

Buyers usually open with the same question: can you put our logo or our own design on the bandana? Yes, and the method decides the colours, detail, feel, the look of the back and the set-up. This guide is for streetwear and merchandise brands, festivals, sports clubs, promotional companies and pet brands choosing a bandana printing method. For sizes, fabrics and uses in one place, see our [bandanas explained guide](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/bandanas-explained/).

Every method below is done in-house in Sialkot, Pakistan, on fabrics from partner mills, and you can see the finished range on our [custom bandanas page](https://mrbalaclava.com/scarves/bandanas/). We print only designs you own or are licensed to use.

## Which printing methods are used for bandanas?

The six main methods are screen printing, discharge printing, digital printing, sublimation, heat transfer and embroidery, plus woven or printed labels for discreet branding. Which one fits depends first on the fabric: cotton takes screen, discharge and digital prints, while sublimation works only on polyester.

Our [decoration methods overview](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/decoration-methods/) covers them across all products; for silk squares and long scarves, see the [scarf printing and finishing guide](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/scarf-printing-finishing-guide/).

## How does screen printing work on a bandana?

Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh screen onto the fabric, one screen for each colour. It is the classic method for cotton bandanas, logos and paisley patterns, and gives strong, flat colours with clean edges.

- **Fabric:** cotton poplin, cotton twill and voile (simple designs); also polyester twill. On stretch tubes the ink can crack when stretched, so it is kept to small logos.
- **Colours and detail:** usually up to a handful of flat colours, matched to Pantone references; fine lines work well, while photos and soft gradients are better printed digitally.
- **Feel:** bandana screen prints usually use soft inks that sink into the cotton, so the hand stays soft; large solid areas can feel slightly firmer.
- **Front and back:** a one-sided print. On light poplin the ink often shows through to the back in a lighter, mirrored version, which is normal for a bandana.
- **Set-up:** one screen per colour, so a design with fewer colours is simpler to set up, and the method pays off as the run of the same design grows.

On a dark ground, ordinary ink takes on some of the fabric colour, so a white logo on black cotton can look greyish. That is where discharge printing comes in. Our [classic paisley cotton bandana](https://mrbalaclava.com/product/classic-paisley-cotton-bandana/) is screen printed, and the [screen printing glossary entry](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/glossary-screen-printing/) explains the terms.

## What is discharge printing, and why is it used on dark bandanas?

Discharge printing removes the dye from a dark cotton fabric where the design sits, instead of laying ink on top. The result is a light design on a black, navy or red ground that feels as soft as the rest of the bandana.

- **Fabric:** 100% cotton dyed with dyes that can be discharged; it does not work on polyester. Each ground colour is checked on the sample, as some discharge more cleanly than others.
- **Colours and detail:** the discharged area turns a light, natural tone; colour can also be added to the discharge paste for coloured designs on a dark ground. Detail is similar to screen printing.
- **Feel:** very soft, because nothing sits on the surface.
- **Front and back:** on light poplin the discharge often goes through the fabric, so the design often shows on the back too.
- **Set-up:** screens as for screen printing, plus a check of the ground colour.

Discharge is the traditional look of biker, skull and dark paisley bandanas; the story of how it shaped the classic red bandana is in our [paisley bandana history](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/paisley-bandana-history/). Our [skull print biker bandana](https://mrbalaclava.com/product/skull-print-biker-bandana/) is discharge printed on black.

## When should you choose digital printing?

Digital printing sprays dye onto the fabric from your file, like an inkjet printer, so there are no screens and no limit on colours. Choose it for photos, gradients, detailed illustrations and many-colour designs on cotton.

- **Fabric:** cotton poplin and voile with reactive dyes, silk with dyes matched to silk; polyester satin can also be printed digitally.
- **Colours and detail:** full colour and fine detail; colours are matched closely to your references and approved on the sample, as each fabric takes dye a little differently.
- **Feel:** the dye becomes part of the fabric, so the hand stays soft.
- **Front and back:** one-sided; on fine voile the design shows lighter on the back.
- **Set-up:** no screens, so it usually suits small runs, many designs or many colours.

Our [cotton voile](https://mrbalaclava.com/materials/fabric/cotton-voile-scarf-fabric/) is usually printed this way, because its fine weave holds detail well.

![Digitally printed cotton voile bandana with a detailed full-colour pattern and one corner turned back](https://mrbalaclava.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/digitally-printed-cotton-voile-bandana-with-a-detailed-photo-1024x683.webp)

*Digital printing gives full colour and fine detail; the turned-back corner shows the lighter reverse.*

## How does sublimation work, and which bandanas can be sublimated?

Sublimation prints the design on paper and transfers it into polyester with heat, where the dye bonds with the fibre. It gives bright, edge-to-edge colour with no feel on the surface, and works only on polyester with a light base.

- **Fabric:** polyester twill, polyester satin, stretch polyester microfibre and jersey (tube and sports bandanas) and stretch velvet. It cannot be used on cotton or silk.
- **Colours and detail:** unlimited colours and photo detail; it cannot print white, because white is the fabric itself, so the base is white or very light.
- **Feel:** nothing on the surface; the fabric feels the same as before printing.
- **Front and back:** one-sided; on thin polyester the back is usually a lighter version of the front. A tube bandana is printed all the way round.
- **Set-up:** no screens; each design is printed from the file, so it suits small runs and many designs.

Our [polyester silk-touch twill](https://mrbalaclava.com/materials/fabric/polyester-silk-touch-twill/) is the usual fabric for sublimated squares, and the [sublimation glossary entry](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/glossary-sublimation/) gives a short definition.

*Sublimation prints edge to edge on polyester; the reverse (right) is usually lighter.*

## What are heat transfer and embroidery used for?

Heat transfer presses a printed film onto the bandana, which suits small logos, names and numbers. Embroidery stitches the logo into the fabric, most often a small logo in one corner, and gives a textured finish.

### Heat transfer

The design is printed or cut on a thin film and pressed on with heat. It works on cotton and polyester, including stretch tubes, and is handy for individual names or numbers on a team order. Because the film sits on top, it is kept to small areas: a large transfer makes the bandana stiffer to fold and knot. Set-up is light, so it suits small runs.

### Embroidery

Your logo is turned into a stitch file and embroidered, usually in one corner so it shows when the bandana is folded into a triangle. It suits cotton poplin and twill well; on satin, voile and stretch fabric it is tested first, because fine cloth can pucker. The back shows the stitches and a light backing, so embroidery is a one-sided look. Set-up is the stitch file, made once per logo. Our [embroidered logo bandana](https://mrbalaclava.com/product/embroidered-logo-bandana/) shows a corner motif.

## How can labels brand a bandana without printing on it?

A small woven or printed label sewn into one hem carries your brand discreetly and keeps the design clean. It is also where fibre content, origin and care information usually go.

Woven labels have the brand woven in; printed satin or cotton labels are softer and carry more text. Buyers usually need fibre content and country of origin on the label for markets such as the US and the EU, with care symbols commonly shown to ISO 3758. Hang tags, header cards and folded retail packs finish the order, and the [labels and packaging guide](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/labels-and-packaging/) lists the options. The [woven label glossary entry](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/glossary-woven-label/) explains the label types.

## Which printing method suits which bandana fabric?

Cotton takes screen, discharge and digital prints; polyester takes sublimation; heat transfer, embroidery and labels work across most fabrics. The table gives the usual pairings.

| Method | Cotton poplin, voile, twill | Polyester twill and satin | Stretch microfibre / jersey (tube, sports) | Silk | Stretch velvet |

Each fabric is described in more detail, with feel and care, in our [bandana fabrics guide](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/bandana-fabrics-guide/).

## How do you choose a bandana printing method?

Start with the design and fabric, then the number of pieces per design.

| If your design is… | Usually choose | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A logo or pattern in a few flat colours on cotton | Screen printing | Strong, Pantone-matched colours; set-up spreads over the run |
| A light design on black, navy or red cotton | Discharge printing | Light, soft print with no layer on top |
| A photo, gradient or many-colour design on cotton | Digital printing | No screens, full colour, soft hand |
| Full colour edge to edge, or a tube bandana | Sublimation on polyester | Bright colour right to the hem or all round |
| Names or numbers for a team | Heat transfer | Each piece can be different |
| A small, discreet logo | Embroidery or a woven label | Textured or woven branding in one corner or hem |

*A starting point; our team suggests the method when we see your artwork.*

Two more points help. If you want the design to look the same on both sides, ask about it with your quote: a single print is one-sided, and a true two-sided look needs a second print or two layers sewn together, which our team confirms for your design. And if you plan many small designs, digital printing or sublimation usually keeps set-up low; for one design in larger numbers, screen printing usually pays off. Our [custom bandana cost guide](https://mrbalaclava.com/journal/custom-bandana-cost/) explains what changes the price.

Our [design support team](https://mrbalaclava.com/manufacturing/services/design-support/) can usually help adapt a logo or paisley layout to the method you choose.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is sublimation or screen printing better for bandanas?

It depends on the fabric and the design. Screen printing suits cotton and designs with a few flat colours; sublimation suits polyester and full-colour, edge-to-edge designs.

### Can you print a bandana on both sides?

A standard print is one-sided, though on thin fabric the design usually shows lighter on the back. A matching look on both sides needs a second print or two layers sewn together; ask with your quote and we confirm what suits your design.

### Can you print white on a black bandana?

Yes, on cotton: discharge printing gives a soft, light design on dark grounds. Sublimation cannot print white, so it needs a light polyester base.

### Can you print our logo in exact Pantone colours?

Screen printing matches Pantone references closely, and digital and sublimation colours are matched to your file. Every fabric takes colour a little differently, so the colour is approved on the sample; our [Pantone glossary entry](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/glossary-pantone/) explains the system.

### What is the print area on a bandana?

It depends on the size, the method and whether the design runs off the edge. Our artwork template shows the print area and bleed for each size, and the [mockup approval step](https://mrbalaclava.com/help/mockup-approval/) confirms the placement before production.
